For quite some time I have been meaning to write up something short, sweet, and pithy, explaining why saying evolution is just a theory is, well, dumb. It’s like saying the Eiffel Tower is just a tower.
But I don’t need to write it up: it’s now been done.

I often say that there is a difference between evolution and evolutionism. This is nice middle ground where I can say evolution IS a fact, but they can believe whatever they want about the past for all I care.

I had a lengthy conversation with a semi-creationist the other day. He says he believes in evolution but that we did not arise directly from apes, that we are somehow special. I infer that he means god took apes and magically turned them into us. I suppose it’s a step better than young Earth ID - BS but only a small step.
The funny part, his first name is Darwin.

One thing I’ve always wondered about is whether you can have evidence for a hypothesis that ultimately turns out to be false.
i.e. is it possible to have ‘evidence’ for creationism, given that creationism is false? Creationists have lots of stuff they claim to be evidence- but should we say they have no evidence, or merely that they have no convincing evidence?

I think you should still do one, BA. Yours will be better still, though this one was quite good.
The predictive principle was mentioned but the important issue of their falsifiability was not. This is important as a theory takes on all comers, it does not sit in the corner and hide.
I like what was said about laws, but his explanation implies that laws are required for a theory to be descriptive.
In the case of Evolution theory, as with many great theories, is the number of interlocking arguments that come from many different directions and converge to bolster the theory.
Sometimes a theory is suppresed due to “intolerable conflict”. Darwin’s arguements and reasoning were so extensive that his theory withstood major conflict, including Kelvin’s 20 million year-old earth - far short of Darwin’s natural selection/branching requirements. But that was Darwin and friends only; mainstream science rejected it until the conflict vaporized with the realization of genetics.

Creationists have no evidence that hasn’t been refuted yet.
It’s possible for something to be evidence of an ultimately false hypothesis without that evidence being false (or even particularly unconvincing), as long as it’s also evidence for the true hypothesis.
Newton’s theory of gravity had plenty of evidence. Einstein’s takes the same evidence, but also manages to incorporate evidence against Newton’s, which is why it’s ultimately the better theory.

Yes, it’s possible to have evidence for a hypothesis that turns out to be false.
For instance, based on extensive measurements and observations, I could have lots of evidence supporting the idea that the motion of the planets around the sun is caused by the vector sum of instantaneous attractive forces acting pairwise between the planets and the sun, proportional to the masses of the bodies and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the bodies. Within the range of scientific instruments of a little over a hundred years ago, this hypothesis was supported by all known measurements and observations within the known limits of the precision of those observations except for one: the precession of the orbit of Mercury was off by something like 40 arcseconds/century. That anomaly was taken as evidence in support of the hypothesis that there was another planet, unseen for some reason, located closer to the sun than Mercury, that was disturbing Mercury’s orbit.
Of course, we now have a theory that explains both the motion of the planets plus the unexplained 40 arcseconds/century precession, plus lots of other anomalies we didn’t know about 100+ years ago. Curiously enough, we have tons of evidence which supports this new theory (the General Theory of Relativity), and we have tons of evidence which supports a different theory (Quantum Mechanics in general, Quantum Field Theory in specific). Both of these theories are extremely well tested, have tons of evidence supporting them, and are both accepted by physicists generally as the best we’ve got right now. It’s also known that for deep reasons, that they are fundamentally incompatible with each other. So all the evidence that exists in physics support two grand hypothesis which we know are false.

Here’s my thinking. Creationism is popular in part because there’s lot’s of evidence for it, even though it’s refuted or faked evidence.
There must be powerful reasons for so many people to believe in creationism. It would be interesting to know how much of it is because of the creationist’s amassed evidence.
It’s the same with the moon hoax. There’s a lot of ‘evidence’ which seems to support the moon hoax story. The fact that the evidence is all rubbish has to be weighed against the sheer volume of evidence available on many websites.
I suspect that psychologically, in many cases, quantity beats quality. A large amount of poor quality information works quite well to convince most people.

Hmmm. I understand the difference between a theory and a law, but perhaps a law of evolution could be defined just to shut up the “it’s only a theory” idiots.
So if a law is supposed to be a true, general and universal statement, based on empirical and repeatable observations of nature, at least according to the definitions I have seen, would the following work:
“Within a biological eco system, characteristics which increase the probability of survival and procreation of a species will become more common over time and those which are detrimental will become less common to the point of elimination”
or
“In a natural system, organisms will change over successive generations, gaining traits which benefit procreation and loosing traits that prevent it.”

Christian, for most creationists, evidence is very minor concern that is simply used to bolster their own beliefs in the inerrancy of the Bible.
I explained this to you in a previous thread. The driving force behind creationism is not evidence it is the doctrine of Biblical inerrancy. (Even if there isn’t any evidence (and I don’t believe there is) they would simply invent some.) Specifically they believe that if you can’t accept that the first few chapters of Genesis are literally true, then you have no basis for believing anything in the Bible, especially the Resurrection of Jesus. In other words, reject a literal interpretation of Genesis and you have no basis for your Christian faith.
That’s all there is to it. When creationists cite evidence, they only do it to provide their fellow creationists with a way of feeling comfortable with their belief in Biblical inerrancy by casting doubt on scientific claims that they see as contradicting the Bible.

I hear the “just a theory” argument so much (I believe that was part of the statement in Dover) that it has become one of those things that threaten me with a cranial explosion when someone says it. I will keep this handy so I can just link it or email it. I may also keep a couple of copies on me for those discussions at the pub.
However, I do also agree with George that falsfiability should have been covered.

The words primary meaning has to do with abstraction, and doesn’t relate to it’s accuracy one way or the other.
A theory is an abstraction, a theoretical description or model, as opposed to data which just is what it is. The abstractions are built from data, of course.
So, just because a theory is not widely accepted doesn’t make it less of a theory. And just because it’s inaccurate, doesn’t make it less of a theory.
Newtons theory of gravity is still a theory even though it’s not 100% accurate.
So the article is confused. And apparently so is the BA.

No, Zoot, you are the one that is confused, since you ignore the very first highlight of the article. We’re NOT talking about the primary meaning of the word theory, we’re talking about the scientific meaning of the word. A scientific theory is NOT just an abstraction of data. Abstraction may be part of it, but there’s a little bit more to it, as the article clearly explains.
The scientific meaning of theory does relate to accuracy, namely how accurately it can explain all observations and how well it predicts. If new observations conflict with a scientific theory, then either the observations are wrong (IE a broken telescope) or the scientific theory is no longer valid, and needs to be replaced or amended (Newton vs Einstein).
Newton’s theory of gravity is still a theory, but it is not a scientific theory (anymore), since it cannot explain all observations.

Oh Zoot, you do not understand the difference between hypotheses and theories:
An hypothesis is just a guess to explain observation. Most are disproved by further observations. One tests hypotheses by trying to disprove them.
A theory is well tested. Many tried to disprove it, but it survived. It explains observations and makes testable predictions. An example of a theory is the Theory about Gravity. If you do not believe the Theory about Gravity, feel free to test it — by jumping off a cliff. If you disprove the Theory about Gravity, you will win a Nobel-Prize. If not, you will still make the local newspaper — in the obituaries.
You deliberately confound the technical meaning of the word “Theory†with its colloquial meaning. This is an old creationistic ploy.

Drbuzz0, the two versions of your ‘Law of Evolution’ are essentailly identical, but IMHO, the first one should be used, if for no other reason than it ’sounds’ more Scientific. Since you proposed that Law mostly to impress the deniers, it is important that you get the language right.
Creationists love to use the language of Science, to confuse the masses, I think it’s only fair that Science use the language of Science to state our position clearly, to illuminate the uninitated.
Conversly, it should be possible for us to formulate a series of bogus ‘laws’ of creationism, using nothing but theological language, that would either clearly illustrate the vacuousness of creationism, or to so completely muddy the waters of creationism that no one could possibly understand their positions (any takers?)?

I say, this is probably the most rational, succinct explanation between the difference of a Law and a Theory that I have ever heard. This puts the difference in layman’s terms about the difference, and provides an excellent frame of reference for describing the difference. Now, when someone says “it’s just a theoryâ€, I have the background understanding to provide them with an unequivocal, “Idiot†response. Thanks!

slang: I meant the primary meaning in the scientific context obviously. Not the meaning it has in every day use. I don’t consider that primary. Your idea that a theory becomes unscientific the moment it is superseded is bizarre. We can predict with some certainty that almost all current theories will be obsolete or refined sooner or later, which by your logic means we have no theories at all.
Walabio: I think you are mistaking theory as such with the level of acceptance it has. Tell me, exactly how many scientists must subscribe to a theory before it becomes a theory in your book? Fact of the matter is that no theory is ever proved beyond any doubt. We use them to the extent that they work until we encounter a theory that works better. Your statement on gravity makes no sense to me in the context.
And no, I am not trying to mix up theory in the sense of speculation with theory in the sense of evolution. I am just saying that the article misses the mark. Not all theories have explanatory value. Not all theories have massive amounts of data to back them up (and even if they do it’s not proof, just strong support). Not all theories are well supported. But what they all are, is an abstraction of a given set of data, for the purpose of facilitating predictions.

I just read an old (2004 or 2005, I think) opinion piece by Mark Hartwig of the Disheveled Institute which anticipated the “theory is not just a hunch” argument. He casually dismissed it, saying it only supports the need to “critically analyze” with “an open mind” evolutionary theory before ignoring it.
In cases like this we need to argue why Creationism (including Intelligent Design) is not science, that ID presents notheory or hypotheses that can withstand testing, and why ID and its Creationist relatives are basically dishonest attempts to keep people ignorant.

I know of no places where Darwin’s theory of evolution breaks down. But just about every theory needs to change over time, and I’d be very surprised if sexual selection was the last addition or refinement.

Newton didn’t have a theory, he had a law. He never came up with a good scientific explanation for why gravity worked, he only described how it worked. We did not have a theory of gravity until general relativity.
And to answer your question, Zoot, a hypothesis becomes a theory when it becomes accepted as the best explanation available by a significant majority of the scientific community. It is sort of hard to narrow down a specific percentage but a hypothesis becomes a theory when the scientific consensus says it does. That is the only difference between the two, the level of evidence supporting it as understood by the scientific community. A theory that has been superceded by another theory is still considered a theory because it still is able to explain all of the evidence that it explained before.
I personally look at it this way:
A fact is a description of something, an observation, an event, or a cause-and-effect relationship. Fact do not explain why the thing observed is how it is, only described it. It is a what or when, not a how or why. In order for facts to be trusted in any way they generally have to be reproducible or observable by anybody (this is where parapsychology breaks down). “Putting water on a wood fire makes it go out” is a fact. This is very important: facts can be proven wrong. An observation can turn out to be inaccurate, break down at high precisions, or turn out to just be a figment of someone’s imagination. That a solid object is continuous was considered a fact, but when we were able to analyze it with more precision we found this was wrong.
A law is like a fact, except mathematical in nature and more general in applicability. It described a cause-an-effect relationship in a quantitative manner. This relationship has to be observed by a large number of people in a wide variety of situations. Newton’s law of universal gravitation is an example. Law are generally not shown to be wrong, only incomplete or not as widely applicable as originally thought. Newton’s laws still describe a wide variety of cause-and-effect relationships, just not as many as was originally expected.
Facts and laws are boring. Anyone can go out and see what is. What is more interesting to science is why something is.
A hypothesis is an explanation. It says why one ore more laws and/or facts are how they are, the processes the explain how they facts and laws operate. In order to by a hypothesis, it must also predict laws and/or facts we have not seen before. This is where creationism and intelligent design break down, they can explain what we have seen but make no predictions about things we have seen (or if they do they are contradictory or forgotten when proven to be wrong). As some else said, “string theory” is really a hypothesis. It has made predictions but many, if not most, cannot currently be tested. CERN should remedy that.
A theory is a hypothesis that has made enough predictions that have turned out to be true that the scientific community considers it (or at one time considered it) the explanation available for the facts and laws it deals with. Evolution is a theory, most likely the best-supported theory of all time. General relativity is a theory, also very well supported, even though no one has been able to make it work at a quantum level. It is the best explanation we currently have for the set of facts and laws with which it deals, even though it cannot explain every fact and law.

I once had a conservation with a creationist. It was the most annoying and frustrating 30 minutes of my life. Banging my head against a wall would have been more satisfying and productive. To this day I avoid talking evolution around creationists, and I have some in-laws that buy into it

Zoot, you have hit upon a point that is difficult to make. You are correct that theories are explanations, and so are abstractions rather than the data itself. What is difficult to explain is that the status of scientific theory has a component of “validated” versus “invalidated”. This is not explicit in the terminology.
Theories in and of themselves are possible explanations. However, theories get validated or invalidated by comparison with data, by making predictions of new implications and testing those predictions, etc. By the time something is labeled a scientific theory, it has been tested to some level of scrutiny. Exactly what level of scrutiny is not an absolute criteria, but rather a bit more situational depending upon the level of knowledge in that field and the amount of data that is affected. It is possible to later invalidate a theory.
What is missing is that scientists rely on the latest and greatest theories, the ones that are most complete and best fit the data. When data is found that doesn’t fit, scientists must either refine the theory, or replace it with a new one that fits all the data better. When that happens, the old theories are discarded. They are considered faulty and no longer used.
What does that mean for the “just a theory” argument? If something is a current working scientific theory, then it is the most valid theory in existence. Therefore, it is unfair to dismiss a theory as “just a theory”, because that in itself does not invalidate the theory.

Zoot: Actually, John Logie Baird didn’t need to know about relativity to invent the first working TV system. Though one area of Einstein’s work, in fact the one he got his Nobel prize for, was relevant, i.e. his work on the photoelectric effect. As Baird’s TV did use a photoelectric cell to detect the light reflected from the image into his original electromechanical TV camera.

And I think that blackcat et.al, (who think of theory as a label for approval) maybe hasn’t been exposed to how it’s used outside of physics and biology.
In physics, the theoretical breakthroughs are so distinct and once technology catches up, so thoroughly substantiated that it looks like that.
But Communications theory etc certainly does not follow these patterns. There, the difference between hypothesis and theory comes down to scope and context.
To simplify I’d say something like this:
Hypothesis = a suggestion or suggested answer.
Theory = a answer or model (..etc) that is known to work in practical terms. At least to some extent.
(In my view the “just a theory” statements are nonsensical. They say nothing. Penicillin is just mold!)
John Phillips: You are probably right. I have been told though, that since the electrons that hit the phosphor cells on the screen travel near the speed of light, Einsteins equations were needed to calibrate the sweep frequencies in order to get a clear picture.
..but then I guess, clear picture wasn’t the first concern of the inventor. He was probably ecstatic about any picture at all.

I had the same question/comment as Greg. What is the usage of “theory” as it applies to String Theory. I admit, I’ve tried to learn about it by reading Elegant Universe, but it is several levels of physics above my head. Is there something that makes it a full blown theory? Or is the word used in more of the layman’s way?

That’s a pretty good discussion but I use a shorter, one than that even.
Evolution is an observation (ie. the fossil record or any number of experiments with bacteria, fruit flies etc..)
The theory is the “Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection” which explains the observation (evolution) via Natural selection.
And yes it will never be a law it’s far too complicated for us to ever have everything worked out 100%. Just like Plate Tectonics, but is anyone going to seriously suggest that because we don’t understand 100% of why that the continents aren’t moving?

Strictly, you are correct, but you might want to run that one by Philo T. Farnsworth (we he alive.) Farnsworth, after all invented electronic television, which is the system that is the one used today. Baird’s electromechanical “televisor” solution was never widely implemented, nor was it practical, not to mention of sufficient quality.
One might as well say that Marconi invented radio (it was Tesla.)

YEC: Using the Theory of Spontaneous Generation*, I can predict that meat will grow fly larva, and hay will grow mice. Given that observations fit pretty well with predictions, it still has some validity. Of course, our refined observations have forced us to substantially refine the theory (to the point of discarding that one and coming up with entirely new ones). But that doesn’t change the fact that within the scope of observations at the time, the theory fit the facts quite well.
Based on how many other Theories went by the wayside, we can safely assume that the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection will be invalidated eventually (in fact, I’d wager that it has many times already, and that the current Theory is not the same one we were using a century ago). But the scope of observations supporting the theory are many orders of magnitude more precise than those supporting the Theory of Spontaneous Generation, so the level of wrongness is highly unlikely to be even close. Which, of course, is the normal reasoning for comparing the two–it’s a false argument that tries (unsuccesfully) to make it appear that Natural Selection and Spontaneous Generation are on the same footing, and that Natural Selection could completely collapse at any moment.
Check out this essay by Isaac Asimov for probably better wording of what I’m trying to say.
* Note: I don’t think it’s technically proper to use capitals for Spontaneous Generation, because I don’t think it was ever formally set out as “the best solution we have right now”, but I could be wrong. In that vein, I also don’t know if it was ever considered a “theory”, or just a common hypothesis.

I don’t think any explanations which are attempted in a “discussion” with these IDers, YECers, and literal interpreters of the fairy tale book in which they put their faith, be it the Koran, the Bible (any version), etc. will make a rat’s ass bit of difference. Denial and denunciation will be the result. One cannot make reasonable headway with a closed mind.

I followed the link to the ‘not just a theory’ web site and noticed that at the bottom on one of the pages Google chose at random to display links to three creationist / ID web sites in the advertising section. And this is apparently common enough that the ‘not just a theory’ site has this disclaimer above the ad section, “This site supports the theory of evolution, although google may choose to display ads here that don’t.” The ads displayed at that time where “Intelligent Designâ€, “Creation or Evolutionâ€, “Creation Scienceâ€, and “Beyond the Big Bang.â€

Zoot: You are giving yourself a bit of a whitewash here. What prompted criticism was your initial remarks, which are not even substantiated by
the changing sands of your later positions. Recall, you started out saying:

So your key point was that “theory” in science is defined by its form, not
its function and not its usefulness or reliability. You also claimed that the
BA was somehow confused on this point. Then you later completely
contradicted yourself, without comment, when you said:

I agree with your latter writings, but not the early ones. The point of the article is that the statement “just a theory”, when applied to our best theories like evolution, is inaccurate not in the word “theory” but in the word “just”. This is just what the BA meant when he compared it to the Eiffel tower being “just a tower”. In light of all this, I fail to see any “confusion” on the part of the article or the BA, and I wonder if that opinion of yours has changed as much as your meaning for theory.

The whole argument as I see it needs to be boiled down into something that anyone could understand. For example :
Observed Fact: My neighbour has a bottle of milk delivered every morning.
Hypothesis (based on observed facts): My neighbour drinks milk.
This is the best possible hypothesis at the time based on the known facts, and there are no observed facts which contradict it, so it is agreed to be a theory.
At some later date more facts may be revealed, such as:
Observed fact: My neighbour owns a cat.
Now the theory must be modified to include the possibility that either my neighbour or her cat OR BOTH drink the milk. More observation is required before these new facts can be incorporated into a modified theory.
etc. Maybe someone can come up with a better example, but it’s late and I’ve got a headache (that’s a fact!)

I don’t equate usefulness with accuracy (or truth in any sense). So the way I see it, my position hasn’t changed, though I have expressed it in a couple of different ways.
The article basically states that “theory” is as close to absolute truth we will ever get, and what I’m saying is that you can’t load all that status on to the word theory alone. Use the term “established theory” or “widely accepted theory”.
And if you look at a wider selection of science, in particular disciplines involving human behavior you’ll find that many contradictory theories can coexist, equally accepted because they reveal different things and are useful for different purposes.
Ultimately, we are left with a (typically falsifiable) abstraction of data. That definition is valid for all scientific uses I know of. There is reality, and there is theory. The second is an abstraction of the first. More or less well made.
So, the confusion I see, in the article, and by extension in the BA, is that the word theory is being redefined to mean “well established theory” as though it was a universal definition valid for all science. It isn’t, and we shouldn’t pretend that it is just to get the explanation of the word down into a format that a creationist might understand.

What you’re looking at here, Zoot, is the formal definition of a scientific theory, versus the day-to-day definition people throw around (even scientists sometimes use it, unfortunately, which doesn’t help matters).
In science, you have three rungs, which can be roughly translated into everyday speak for clarity:
A conjecture is a basic idea–something you came up with over breakfast, or whatever. This is what laypeople usually call a “theory”.
A hypothesis is sometimes called an educated guess. A conjecture becomes a hypothesis after you’ve researched it a bit and it seems to hold up to preliminary scrutiny. This is sometimes also called a “theory” in day-to-day.
A theory is a hypothesis that has been tested over and over (and over again!), and has passed all those tests. Nothing, or very little, has been found to disprove it, and it gradually passes into the realm of “Unless someone comes up with something earth-shattering, it’d be silly to question this”–and scientists stop trying to test it, because it just isn’t interesting to test any more. This is what laypeople generally call a “fact”.
Backing up these three ideas are facts, which are simply things that have been observed to happen. A layperson would generally call these “observations” or “statistics”.

In the olden days religious people were always really good at adapting their beliefs and practices to make them more attractive to non-belivers. Why can’t they do that any more? All they would have to do is say that the Will of their god(s) is what drives the natural laws. Being a supernatural phenomenon the action of that Will would be entirely undetectable and entirely compliant with the natural laws.
That would be thinking ahead: science would never be able to infringe on their beliefs, whether intentionally or accidentally.

I am always fascinated by this creation versus evolution crap. Charles Darwin had no problem with God and Evolution. My High School Science teacher described Evolution as a testable, evidence based model of how God made things, not just biology.
I believe that the antievolutionists are not prepared to look at the evolution that they need for their salvation. It is the evolution of mankind’s relationship with God as expressed in the Bible.
It is from the Bible that they claim to find evidence against evolution. I suggest that they take the plank out of their collective eyes.
Is Creationism really religious or a political propaganda campaign? I
suspect the latter.
I would also counsel that those who aren’t religious also be careful of making evolution a religious substitute called evolutionism. That is possibly what the Creationists are really on about, if they were adult enough to speak about it.

The article you link to is interesting but it doesn’t tell the whole story. Evolutionary Theory (as opposed to the Theory of Evolution) is in a state of great flux and there’s no consensus on a number of important issues like random genetic drift, mutationism, punctuated equilibria, etc.
In fact, there is no “Theory of Evolution” in the sense that’s implied in the article. Instead there are a number of different theories about mechanism. They include the Theory of Natural Selection, Neutral Theory, the Theory of Punctuated Equilibria, Mutation Theory, etc. Some of these “theories” are contested.
Let me give you an example of bias in the article. The article says,
This is, quite simply, wrong in my opinion. Natural selection is just one of many mechanisms that give rise to evolution and it’s entirely inappropriate to state that natural selection explains the fact of evolution. The correct way to phrase this statement is, “The Theory of Natural Selection has proven to be an excellent explanation of many aspects of evolution but it can’t explain all examples of evolution. There are other natural mechanisms that are required for a complete explanation of evolution.”

While I found this article very interesting, the definition of a “scientific law” did not match up with what I remembered from my college science classes many years ago. So, I did some googling and did not find the same definition for “scientific law” anywhere. Of the handful of definitions and examples I found, I think this one is the clearest.

People take the old testament way to seriously. Just cause evolution is not in there doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. By the way, we are not the offspring of apes, we shared the same ancestor. If Adam and Eve were the first two, and Eve was made from Adam’s ribs, then Eve would have the same genetic make-up as Adam. This would mean that when they reproduced, their offspring would have not turned out normal. If this reproduction didn’t create offspring with deformities, that would mean that modern biology is crap. This ties into Noah’s ark and two of each animal. Another question is also apparent in this story. How did he fit all the animals in the world in a boat? (Keep in mind Royal Caribbean hasn’t been invented yet) How did he keep the lions from eating the deer? Is this what happened to unicorns? I’m sorry, but the Old Testament has been mistranslated so many times and is just stories. Coming from me, a Roman Catholic, evolution is the only way that makes any sense. And why isn’t there any talk about dinosaurs in the bible? Or are all those bones just plaster molds made by devil worshipers? Thanks for reading my rant…

Patrick, Patrick, Patrick, I can see that you haven’t been properly ‘educated’ by the Disheveled Institute. I’ll try to rectify the situation:
Adam and Eve’s kids were not deformed (and neither were the first several generations afterwards) because A&E were, of course, ‘perfect’. Ergo, their genes had no defects. It was only after several generations of sinners that imperfections began to creep in.
Noah, of course, took only young animals, and most of those were in hibernation. (I know, most animals don’t hibernate, but miracles happened every other Wednesday back then). The Lions didn’t eat the deer because they were vegetarians back in the day, like the T-Rexs.
And of course the fossils were either placed there by Satan to deceive us, or by the Big Guy, to test our faith.
Remember, you CANNOT apply the same rules of evidence, fact, or logic to creationist arguments that you do to those of evilutionists. Creos play by their own rule book.

zoot: I think your post about the difference between a “theory” and a “well-established theory” goes a long way toward explaining your position. I don’t disagree with any of that– my issue was with your claim that the article and the BA were “confused” because they somehow thought all theories are equally useful and hard to contest. I am sure they are aware that there are good theories and bad theories, they were talking about one particular theory, and why it is not “just a theory”. What they were saying is that it is true to say that “evolution by natural selection is a theory”, but it is not true to say it is *just* a theory– the error is in the word just, not the word theory. Thus the dispute must focus on the definition of the word just, not the word theory. The colloquial meaning of “theory” carries none of the weight of a well-established scientific theory, that was their point. You are saying that it helps to call evolution a “well-established theory” so one must say “just a well-established theory”, and I agree with that, as I am sure they would too. But creationists are not going to say “just a well-established theory”, because their whole purpose is to discredit it by pointing out the fact that theories can be speculative, like string theory. The article is saying that evolution is not a similarly speculative type of theory– that’s what it said, and is not confused on the point. It should not have implied that all theories in science are like that– just the well-established ones, but that’s what it was talking about.

By the way…
There is an easier way of disputing the “just a theory” statement. Rather than seeing it as a devaluation of the concept of theory, see it as saying “consisting only of..”.
I.E Evolution is not just a theory, it’s also successful predictions, experimental verifications, and observed mechanisms. It is the natural consequence of the existence of genes.

Having read all of the above, I’m mightily surprised that, though quite a few people have mentioned various Theories etc, have their detractors, and have acknowledged that until something better comes along, we just have to put-up with what we have, these same people have *not* elaborated just where there are difficulties.
Even in the old Newton version, let alone the more elaborate Einstein work, at least in the style that can be understood by the general public, I see no tabulated list of those difficulties, or even “works-in-progress”. Or are we scared of giving ammunition to the Woo-woos, because we haven’t worked out satisfactory reasoning yet?
I’d be delighted to know the latest score, in a “play-by play” description, as to where the action is, or is somebody moving the goalposts all the time? (I should be able to inject “Level-playing-field” in here somewhere, maybe relative to …Relativity).
(Could we have “Scientific Idol Theories”, and a panel for scoring?)
So, what are the hard questions, and how have some theories coped with them? And does it really matter in general terms?

zoot: I think we’re pretty much in agreement now. What makes evolution not “just” a theory is not the way it is written or constructed, it is the body of data that supports it or establishes its value. But the article must have said that.
Ivan: what you are asking for would indeed be very useful, but also very difficult, for so vast a theory as evolution. It’s easier for Einstein’s relativity (where the score is something like Einstein 100, alternatives 0), or for the Big Bang model (model 50, alternatives 2, with the whole second half left to play), because the number of independent observations of note are much more easily enumerated!

Within Biology, one of the big open questions is Biogenesis - how did life itself arise from organic molecules? Evolution (mutation and natural selection, descent from common anscestor with modification, shift in gene frequency within a population, etc) does not strictly cover it. Note that this is an active area of research. Other “holes” in Evolution fit more under the heading of “what are the fine details of exactly how cells incorporated mitochondria as part of their function?” or “what is the precise set of adaptive changes to allow the development of [pick your favorite biochemical process]?” How about “what exactly is the progression of anthropoid apes from monkeys to humans, and exactly how closely are we related to the various extant and extinct apes and homonids?” Those detail level questions have frameworks in some cases (like the last one), but the meat of the details remain to be discovered. These are the “holes” that creationists try to overpromote.

Just to round things out though, it behooves us to note that the ‘evolutionary’ distance between organic molecules and life is millions? of times greater that that between a single-celled organism and any species, which is in turn millions? of times greater than that between the smallest and simplest of creatures to a human. Or a rhinoceros or a a whale or a …?
It also behooves us to note that there is nothing in the larger comprehension of creation to exclude the systematic step-wise refinement technique is developing any and all of life and humanity and intelligence. For that matter, Cro-Magnons (us) existed for some hundred and change millennia before actualizing any spirituality 5768 years ago, just as the good book says.
